How to Set Up the IP Power 9258

Friday, January 1st, 2010

I bought this guy in able to reboot my computer over the internet.

When set up it provides a web page you can log into to control each power outlet on the device and/or set a schedule for when each outlet comes on or turns off.

The directions were very confusing, so here’s a quick write-up of how I got it working for myself:

  1. Plug the 9258 into the wall.
  2. Connect an appliance like a lamp to one of the outlets on the 9258 to test it. (default is off so your lamp won’t be on yet)
  3. Plug the 9258 into your router via an ethernet cable.
  4. Now log into your router and look at the attached devices to find the IP address assigned to the 9258. (For me it was 192.168.1.9. The 9258 presented the name “new-host-2″.)
  5. Type that IP address into the address bar of your browser.
  6. Enter the default user name and password when prompted (user name is admin and password is 12345678)
  7. You’re in! Try turning on an off your lamp.

Your Amazon Wishlist – Get What You Want This Christmas by Changing the Default Order Items are Displayed

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Have you ever noticed how anyone looking at your Amazon wishlist buys you the things at the top of your list? These are the things most recently added, and not necessarily the things you want most.

Rubbing sand in the wound, Amazon even gives you a dropdown to set what priority each item you want is, yet there is no way to have your list be ordered by priority as the default when others view your list.

After half an hour of frustration, I think I’ve found a workaround.

What you do is create a second, private wishlist. Then go through your original wishlist and move each item over to the new private wishlist. (Time saving tip: Change you view to ‘compact’ and you can move multiple items at once.)

Once you have moved everything over to the private list start moving items back onto your original list, but starting with the items you want least and finishing up by adding the items you want most. The items you want most will now be the most recent ones added to your list and will now be at the top.

Fixing LTSpice Error – previous analysis already found

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

I opened up and old .app file I had made in LTSpice and this message kept popping up. And it popped up again when I tried to run the schematic.

The answer is to save your schematics as .asc files instead of .app.

I found the answer here:

Don’t use .app files.

Save your schematic as a .asc file.
File -> Save As
Change the end of the file name to .asc instead of .app .

Close LTspice.

Restart LTspice

Open your previously saved .asc-file
File -> Open

How to List Publications on Your Resume

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

If you have published anything worthwhile related to the career you want, you can include it on your resume.

Simply add a new section at the bottom of your resume titled “Publications” and list each publication in chronological order (newest first). Use APA or MLA bibliographic style to cite the publications. This tool makes it easy (Also if you are the only author, you can leave off your name since it will be assumed that you’re the author.)

A question I had was if it’s worth it to include a publications section if you only have one publication. After some deliberation I decided that it was worth it at least in my case.

Here is my publications section for reference:

PUBLICATIONS

“Behind the Scenes at utilitymill.com.” Python Magazine Aug. 2008: 10+. Print.

Can’t Log in to ING Direct

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Every time I try to log into ING Direct to do online banking with my saving account, I enter my PIN and then it just takes me back to the first login screen.

I tried emailing them but I just get back a stock response about allowing cookies. I’m already allowing cookies!

I tried clearing all of my cookies and now it says:
“We thought you left, so for your security we signed you out. Please sign back in below.”

But every time I try to log in now, It just brings me back to the login page with that same message.

I’m pretty frustrated. I suspect this is happening because I’m on Firefox on Linux (Ubuntu).

I have no answer for now except to log in using Windows :-(
