iPhone GSM Buzz Question

Why does my iPhone make GSM buzz in my speakers when it receives an email even though it is connected via WiFi?

My working theory is that when the phone is in standby (i.e., not being actively used) it turns off its WiFi connection (maybe to save power?) and gets any updated things via GSM.

    For my G1 (android) there are tons of apps that “keep wifi alive” for those people with data plans. apparently that’s exactly what happens – the wifi turns off when the phone is asleep.
